We had plans to hike the Elfin Forest in Escondido yesterday.  We’d heard about it through friends.  It had everything we liked (water, trees, and hills).

Parking was minimal – so we had to park on the road.  In hindsight the next time we go it will be on a weekday or at sunrise.

We decided to take the botanical route … but 10 minutes into it Orbit stepped on a fire ant.  I had noticed them on the trail and saw her start to limp … and upon inspection I found a fire ant buried in her foot pad.

Within 3 minutes it was clear that Orbit couldn’t walk.  She looked like she had a bum leg and was clearly bothered by her paw.  When we picked her up – she was clenching her paw like “the claw” and it was hot to the touch.  Being that I didn’t have any fire ant first aid solutions in my backpack we called it a day and made our way back.

Prior to heading back home we soaked her paws in the cool water of the creek.  I don’t think she liked it that much.

For future reference – first aid for a fire ant bite is as follows:

  • Icepack to the bite areas.
  • Make a paste of baking soda and water to apply to the fire ant bite areas.
  • In severe cases, a dosage of 1-2 mg of plain Benadryl per pound is a good remedy for dogs.

On the way home she kept twitching her leg – she clearly wasn’t comfortable.   But then as soon as we got home she was running around like her crazy self once again.

That said – we’re now in “research” mode for trail booties for dogs.
